Hotel del Coronado sign celebrity birthdays today
Image by Al_HikesAZ We visited San Diego. Some work (Arizona Bar Association CLE by the Sea) (Continuing Legal Education) and some play.) The Hotel del Coronado turned 125 years old this year. They wrapped the main tower in a gold ribbon and bow and had numerous exhibits and tchotchkes commemorating the milestone. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotel_del_Coronado Hotel del Coronado (also known as The Del and Hotel Del) is a beachfront luxury hotel in the city of Coronado, just across the San Diego Bay from San Diego, California. It is one of the few surviving examples of an American architectural genre: the wooden Victorian beach resort. It is one of the oldest and largest all-wooden buildings in California and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977,[3][5] and is a designated California Historical Landmark.[4] When it opened in 1888, it was the largest resort hotel in the world. It has hosted presidents, royalty, and celebrities through the years.[6] The hotel has been featured in numerous movies and books. The hotel received a Four Diamond rating from the American Automobile Association,[7] and was once listed by USA Today as one of the "Top 10 Resorts In The World", though it has since been removed from that list.[8] www.sandiego.com/hotels/hotel-del-coronado Why It's Awesome: The history of the Hotel Del Coronado is what sets it apart from other hotels. Built in 1888, the Hotel Coronado San Diego is known for distinguished Queen Anne architecture which was popular in the Victorian Era, a bright red roof, Illinois Oak lobby, and a famous ghostly inhabitant, Kate Morgan. Ten United States Presidents have stayed at the famous Hotel Del Coronado as well as legends such as Babe Ruth and Thomas Edison. What better way to celebrate a little United States history than booking an elegant room at the waterfront Hotel Coronado San Diego? IMG_1125

Image by Georg Sander The Oldsmobile 88 (a.k.a. Eighty-Eight) is a full-size car sold by the Oldsmobile division of General Motors and produced from 1949 until 1999. From 1950 to 1974 the 88 was the division's top-selling line, particularly the entry-level models such as the 88 and Dynamic 88. The 88 series was also an image leader for Oldsmobile, particularly in the early years (1949â€"51) when it was one of the best performing automobiles thanks to its relatively small size, light weight and advanced overhead-valve high-compression V8 engine originally designed for the larger and more luxurious 98 series but dropped into the smaller six-cylinder Oldsmobile 76 body, creating what was considered the predecessor of musclecars of the 1960s. A large number of variations in nomenclature were seen over this long model runâ€"Delmont, Delta, Dynamic, Jetstar, Starfire, Super, Holiday, L/S, LSS, Celebrity, and Royale were used at various times with the 88 badge, and Fiesta appeared on some station wagons in the 1950s and 1960s. The name was more commonly shown as numbers in the earlier years ("Delta 88", for example) and was changed to spell-out "Eighty Eight" starting in 1989. The Oldsmobile Eighty Eight was produced in Wentzville, Missouri; Flint, Michigan; and Lake Orion, Michigan. (Wikipedia)

Image by Eva Rinaldi Celebrity and Live Music Photographer Hard Rock Cafe Darling Harbour Media And Celebs Event; Sydney, Australia by Eva Rinaldi The world famous Hard Rock Cafe has returned to 'Sin City' Sydney with a vengeance, based on tonight's launch event at the brand new Darling Harbour venue. Hard Rock put on quite a show and rolled out the celebrities and live music including: Hamish Dodds, Matt Sorum, Dave Rich, DJ Lethal, Stan Walker, Angry Anderson, L Huntly, Sarah McLoed, Hamish Rosser, Altiyan Childs, Kris Peterson and Stim McLean. Most of them had turns smashing guitars, which is a trademark of opening new Hard Rock Cafes. We all know that the cost of living and setting up a business in Sydney is considerable, but Hard Rock is certain their latest Australian venture will be a smashing (as in guitar) success. Sydney is one of the busiest markets anywhere globally for the Hard Rock Cafe, says the global chief of the music-themed burgers and ribs franchise. Hamish Dodds, prez and chief exec of Hard Rock International, advised staffing costs down under in Australia make Hard Rock's Sydney operations expensive compared with other global locations, and they are comparing to its other 172 venues which include cafes, hotels and even land based casinos. Yes, casinos, but Australia's The Star and Crown Casino need not worry, as they have no plans for gaming in Australia - at least not any they are talking about. Hard Rock International is owned by the well known and respected Seminole American Indian tribe, which purchased the global Hard Rock brand in 2007 after successfully running two Hard Rock hotel and casino operations in Florida in the U.S. "For us this is an English-speaking country and people understand the history of rock," Mr Dodds said in Sydney on Tuesday ahead of the grand opening of the 500-seat venue in the Darling Harbour entertainment hotbed. "Part of the downside of this market is it's a mature economy - staffing costs in this market are very different to what we would experience in India. "I would say the price mark-up here is about 50 per cent higher than the US - this is probably one of the most expensive markets we have in our portfolio." Mr Dodds advised the Sydney Hard Rock Cafe was priced at a similar level to comparable restaurants in the area and he expected business to be brisk, averaging between 300 to 700 main meals a day. Sydney would be among the top ten performers in the global network, he said, and among the top five of franchised outlets. Tonight signified a return to Sydney for the Hard Rock franchise, which closed its previous venue in East Sydney in 2007. Mr Dodds said Hard Rock had returned to Sydney with a revised and smarter strategy. He said the former business was in a great location for the 1980s when the brand was fresh and people would go to the Hard Rock Cafe. "Copycats harmed Hard Rock's own business and the market changed to the point where we found ourselves in a B minus location and to a degree we lost a bit of relevance", Mr Dodds said. The firm bought back its Sydney franchise in 2007 and has been revived by director and franchise holder Lennie Huntly, former GM of the Sydney business during the 90s. Mr Huntly, who also holds the franchise for the Hard Rock Cafe in Surfers Paradise, said he had been thinking about re-opening a Sydney Hard Rock Cafe since the last one closed. The waterfront location and views over Darling Harbour are a huge plus and soon a live music stage and 600-person music area will be rocking and rolling. "We are focused on not only being about lunch and dinner," he said. Mr Huntly also has the rights to open venues in Melbourne, Cairns and Perth. Melbourne's former venue closed in 2007, but that doesn't mean it will return with a hit. Well done to the good folks at Hard Rock Cafe and we look forward to meeting up with the great guys and girls there again soon. Rock on. TV WEEK LOGIES 2011 dress up celebrities
Image by Eva Rinaldi Celebrity and Live Music Photographer Logies 2011: Katy Perry Adds Firework To Night Of Surprises, by Eva Rinaldi The Australian entertainment industries night of nights was certainly glamorous by Australian standards and delivered strongly in surprises and audience delight. There were a ton of surprises and its safe to say that the organisers, including the Nine Network, got it right this year. An emotional and gracious Karl Stefanovic, who won the Gold Logie, paid tribute to his wife Cass for "giving up a promising TV career of her own with the ABC to let me do this and look after our three beautiful kids." The capacity crowd loved Karl's affectionate words for Network Nine boss David Gyngell -"He's probably at home, in his Homer Simpson undies, scratching himself or whatever he does, but mate, I love you as a boss and more importantly as a friend." He also remembered his family saying he thanked his "mum for her beautiful soul" and his dad "for your male-pattern baldness, big guy." The popular TV presenter - journalist disclosed that his mentor was Laurie Oakes: "The reason I am in this business and want to be for the rest of my life." He had originally promised to stick to soda water, however he left stage with "I'm going to the bar." Stefanovic threw into his entertaining speech that added he did not believe half of Australia would know who he was "if he wasn't pole-axed on Grey Goose vodka". "I thought it was career-ending...but I survived it", he said. "So yes I will probably have two dozen champagnes, a few vodkas and what not, but I will be right for the show in the morning." On the success on the Today Show he shared: "We're risking things but we're both more confident...I've never been more confident in front of the camera, and I don't want that to sound arrogant, but that comes with the miles I've had on air." A ton of actors, actresses and presenters made their way to the podium before Stefanovic at Melbourne's Crown Casino looking a bit bewildered as they grasped their viewer-SMS-voted Most Popular awards. 'Our Karl', the Channel 9 Today host and sometimes 60 Minutes reporter who ran away with the Gold Logie from Packed To The Rafters duo Rebecca Gibney and Jessica Marais, who I understand were hot favourites. The popular awards had the room talking. Asher Keddie of Ten's Offspring, bested Seven's Packed To The Rafters dynamos Gibney and Marais as Most Popular Actress. Another surprise of the TV Week sponsored event was Chrissie Swan of Channel Ten's morning chat show The Circle. She was voted Most Popular New Female Talent...ahead of prime-time personalities Emma Booth, Julie Goodwin, Poh Ling Yeow and Hannah Marshall. Ten's MasterChef, one of the highest-rating series in Australian television, was nominated for just one award - Most Popular Reality Program - which it won. Stefanovic also won Most Popular Presenter ahead of Hamish Blake, Adam Hills, Shaun Micallef and Swan. Underbelly: The Golden Mile's Firass Dirani won Most Popular New Talent, however his show was beaten by Packed To The Rafters as the viewers' favourite drama. Channel Nine got more acholades with Underbelly being judged Most Outstanding Drama, while the Most Outstanding Actor and Actress went to Richard Roxburgh (Rake, ABC) and Claire van der Boom (Sisters Of War, ABC). News media commentators, celebrities and the general public agreed that the strong line up of performing artists, headlined by Katy Perry, made this years Logies one of the best ever. He also remembered his family saying he thanked his "mum for her beautiful soul" and his dad "for your male-pattern baldness, big guy." The popular TV presenter - journalist disclosed that his mentor was Laurie Oakes: "The reason I am in this business and want to be for the rest of my life." He had originally promised to stick to soda water, however he left stage with "I'm going to the bar." Stefanovic threw into his entertaining speech that added he did not believe half of Australia would know who he was "if he wasn't pole-axed on Grey Goose vodka". Street Art: Wallace & Ladmo Tribute Mural, Close-up, Phoenix, Arizona

Street Art: Wallace & Ladmo Tribute Mural, Close-up, Phoenix, Arizona

A few nice young celebrities images I found:

Street Art: Wallace & Ladmo Tribute Mural, Close-up, Phoenix, Arizona young celebrities
Image by classic_film If you live in or used to live in Arizona and fondly remember the long-running kids' TV program "The Wallace and Ladmo Show," you owe it to yourself to check out the Wallace and Ladmo tribute mural in central Phoenix. The historic television show, which began airing in 1954 and went off the air in 1989, is often aired in re-runs on weekends in the Phoenix area. Mural location: First Studio Building 631 N. 1st Avenue Phoenix, Arizona In the background, you can see a portion of the historic, towering Westward Ho Hotel that was built in 1928. The old building on which the mural characters of Wallace, Ladmo, and Gerald is painted was originally the home of KPHO, Arizona's first TV station, and was the birthplace of "The Wallace and Ladmo Show." The KPHO studio was in the Westward Ho building, which was constructed in 1948. KPHO first signed on the air on December 4, 1949, not only becoming Arizona's first TV station, but the only TV station between El Paso, Texas and San Diego, California. Of the three main cast members, only one, Pat McMahon, still survives and is still active in local radio and TV. He is currently the host of "The Morning Scramble" morning news/talk show in Arizona. Bill "Wallace" Thompson passed away July 23, 2014 at the age of 82; Ladimir "Ladmo" Kwiatkowski passed away on March 2, 1994 at age 65. The beloved comedian had battled cancer for a few years, but never publicized it because he was concerned about how it would affect his thousands of fans, young and old. He lost his battle and his death came as a shock for many Arizonans, myself included. Before joining Wallace in front of the camera, Ladmo had worked as the show's cameraman; prior to that, he was an ASU baseball star. Program synopsis of "The Wallace and Ladmo Show" from IMDb: "The Wallace and Ladmo Show", the longest-running same-cast kids' show in television history, featured sharply observed comedy skits that satired popular films, television shows and music acts, lampooned local and national politics and mercilessly mocked the station management and program sponsors. Aiming its comedy squarely at hip adults, and never talking down to kids in the audience, it won over legions of fans of every age who still turn out by the thousands for revivals and conventions. It was the "Saturday Night Live" of its age, daring and subversive, a comedy landmark. Summary from Phoenix New Times: It's located on the north side of First Studio, the former KPHO TV-5 studios, and it's a big, arty hunk of nostalgia for those of us who grew up here. The Wallace and Ladmo Show mural depicts Wall-boy mugging alongside his longtime sidekick Ladmo, who's wearing his signature T-shirt tie and pulling a classic Ladmo face. They're flanking local legend Pat McMahon, who's in Gerald drag circa 1969, and the whole thing, which takes up nearly the entire width of the ancient building, is a sight that may cause Phoenicians of a certain age to drive into a lamppost the first time they see it. Created by artists Nomas, Casebeer, and Jenny Ignaszewski, it's a gorgeous tribute to the longest-running children's TV show in American broadcast history. More info about the show is posted at Wikipedia -- here's a snippet: The Wallace and Ladmo Show has been the subject of several museum exhibits over the years. In 2009, two different exhibits about the show's history were on view: one at the Arizona Historical Society in Tempe (AHS has over 2,500 Wallace and Ladmo items in their collection), and the other at the Mesa Historical Museum. There is also a permanent exhibit in the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix.

Vintage Arizona Neon Sign: Hotel San Carlos, View to the Northeast, Phoenix, Arizona young celebrities
Image by classic_film On Halloween morning, my son, my daughter, her boyfriend, and I trekked out to central Phoenix to check out the vintage Hotel San Carlos, a posh, old hotel that is still in operation, has ties to the Golden Age of Hollywood, and has a legendary reputation for being haunted. Among the ghosts that reportedly reside in the hotel is a young woman named Leone Jensen, who committed suicide by jumping from her hotel room window on the 7th floor after being rejected by her fiancé. More details about her death and other ghosts are posted here. While our visit was ghost-free, the kids and I had a blast with our unique Halloween excursion. Location: 202 N. Central Avenue Phoenix, Arizona Some historical background, text selections from the Hotel San Carlos website: The Hotel San Carlos was established in 1928, and is a proud member of The Historic Hotels of America and The National Trust for Historic Preservation. 1927: The Hotel San Carlos finally became the hotel project the growing city yearned for when Charles Harris, financed by Dwight B. Heard, purchased the hotel site and began construction. The design was done by nationally known architects, G. Witecross Ritchie of Los Angeles, in the Italian renaissance style. 1928: The formal Grand opening March 20th, 1928 was boldly announced in the Arizona Gazette (now the Arizona Republic). Mr. Dwight Heard, a prominent figure in Phoenix real estate and development, and his partner, Charles Harris, were very proud of their state-of-the-art hotel. It was the most modern hotel in the entire Southwest United States, the first air conditioned, high-rise hotel in Phoenix, and the first high-rise hotel with elevators (hand operated) in the state. It had Italian tapestries, a card room, dancing, and an outdoor sun room. At a time when the latest automobile, the model "A" Ford, cost only 0, the Hotel San Carlos was build at a cost of nearly 0,000! [...] 1928-1960: During this time, the hotel continued to be a hub for the Phoenix elite, political and social, as well as a Mecca for Hollywood stars. Mae West stayed here in 1929 while performing at the Orpheum Theatre, 203 W. Adams, in "I'm No Angel". It was reported she left orders with the front desk to "not be awaked until 3:00 pm with a bottle of champagne and two glasses." The Phoenix Press Club was founded here. Clark Gable and Carole Lombard spent much of their romantic time here in Arizona at the San Carlos. Gable often referred to Lombard as the "love of his life." Marilyn Monroe was a guest during her filming of Bus Stop. She wanted a room close to our pool on the third floor, so that she could slip out to the deck and sunbath with the least amount of attention. Other stars such as Spencer Tracy, Jean Harlow, Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman, Gary Cooper, Humphrey Bogart, Gene Autry, and big band artists Kay Starr, Woody Herman and Harry James all spent time here over the years. Governors, senators, and countless other notables, also enjoyed the services of the San Carlos over the years.

Known for his barbed wit, he was one of the most successful playwrights of late Victorian London, and one of the greatest celebrities of his day. As the result of a famous trial, he suffered a dramatic downfall and was imprisoned for two years of hard labour after being convicted of the offence of "gross indecency". The scholar H. Montgomery Hyde suggests this term implies homosexual acts not amounting to buggery in British legislation of the time See on map where this picture was taken. [?]

1951 Old Gold Cigarettes Ad, with TV Announcer & Actor Dennis James sell celebrity photos
Image by classic_film Vintage 1950s magazine advertisement, Old Gold Cigarettes, with legendary TV host, actor, and announcer Dennis James (August 24, 1917â€"June 3, 1997), 1951 Brief Dennis James bio from Wikipedia: American television personality, actor, and announcer. He is credited as the host of television's first network game show, the DuMont Network's Cash and Carry, in 1946. James was the first person to host a telethon and the first to appear in a television commercial. [...] James often addressed the TV audience as "Mother", a practice he had begun when discussing the finer points of wrestling during his sports broadcasts. He feared the men in the audience would be insulted by the implication that they didn't already know the rules (even if they didn't), but would accept that James was merely explaining things for the benefit of women viewers. During the 1953â€"54 season, James was the announcer of the quiz program Judge for Yourself, which aired on NBC, with Fred Allen as the emcee. James gained his greatest fame as the host of numerous game shows. Prior to 1956, he and Bert Parks hosted the ABC musical game show Stop the Music. In 1956, James emceed the short-lived High Finance on CBS in which contestants answer current events questions to build up a jackpot for prizes. James later hosted the NBC daytime revival of Name That Tune (1974â€"75) and his last game show, the weekly syndicated nighttime version of The (New) Price is Right (1972â€"77). James and producer Mark Goodson co-hosted a promotional film, selling stations on the 1972 revival of Price, which was originally hosted by James' fellow TV pioneer Bill Cullen. [...] Outside of sports and game shows, James was also a popular commercial spokesman for products including Old Gold cigarettes, Kellogg's cereals and, through his own production company, many local and regional companies and businesses. For nearly 30 years, James was the spokesman for Physicians Mutual Insurance Company until his death in 1997. His expression "Okay? Okay!" became a trademark in many of James' commercials. He returned to his wrestling roots in the 1978 Henry Winkler film The One and Only as the announcer for Winkler's title match, and was also the wrestling commentator in Rocky III for Rocky Balboa's match against Thunderlips (played by Hulk Hogan). His final acting appearance was in The Method in 1997. ************************* Published in Quick news weekly magazine, Sep. 24, 1951, Vol. 5 No. 13 Fair use/no known copyright. Kinsey (Alfred Charles Kinsey..June 23, 1894 â€" August 25, 1956) is generally regarded as the father of sexology, the systematic, scientific study of human sexuality. He initially became interested in the different forms of sexual practices around 1933, after discussing the topic extensively with a colleague, Robert Kroc. It is likely that Kinsey's study of the variations in mating practices among gall wasps led him to wonder how widely varied sexual practices among humans were. During this work, he developed a scale measuring sexual orientation, now known as the Kinsey Scale which ranges from 0 to 6, where 0 is exclusively heterosexual and 6 is exclusively homosexual; a rating of X, for asexual, was added later by Kinsey's associates. . ............................................................................................................................................................................................ . .....item 1).... Kinsey and sexology ... The Kinsey Reports ... Main article: Kinsey Reports en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinsey_Reports In 1935, Kinsey delivered a lecture to a faculty discussion group at Indiana University, his first public discussion of the topic, wherein he attacked the "widespread ignorance of sexual structure and physiology" and promoted his view that "delayed marriage" (that is, delayed sexual experience) was psychologically harmful. Kinsey obtained research funding from the Rockefeller Foundation, which enabled him to inquire into human sexual behavior. His Kinsey Reportsâ€"starting with the publication of Sexual Behavior in the Human Male in 1948, followed in 1953 by Sexual Behavior in the Human Femaleâ€"reached the top of bestseller lists and turned Kinsey into an instant celebrity. Articles about him appeared in magazines such as Time, Life, Look, and McCall's. Kinsey's reports, which led to a storm of controversy, are regarded by many as an enabler of the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 1970s. PBS.org ... Kinsey in the News Sexual Behavior in the Human Male | Sexual Behavior in the Human Female www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/kinsey/sfeature/sf_response_female.... ----- Sexual Behavior in the Human Female (1953) In the five years between the releases of Kinsey's two reports, America completed its evolution from postwar victor to Cold War combatant. With the spectre of nuclear destruction hovering over the world, individuals like Senator Joseph McCarthy parlayed fears of Communism into political power and personal attacks on those in the opposition, who were smeared as un-American. A middle-class ideal of security and family life emerged in this domestic revival. At a time when American society seemed under attack, Kinsey's report on women was received like another torch on the bonfire. Although some welcomed the report as a necessary tool for education and understanding, outrage crested over the report's implications for American womanhood. A congressional committee launched an investigation into Kinsey's and his funders' possible connections to the Communist Party, and the Indiana professor soon lost his research funding. ................................................................................ ----- Time, August 17, 1953 Kinsey for Lutherans With Dr. Alfred Kinsey's new book Sexual Behavior in the Human Female almost ready for publication, Missouri Synod Lutherans are preparing a kind of Kinsey report of their own. In 1950 the church's Triennial Convention appropriated ,000 for a 25-man research team to investigate Biblical references and Christian teaching on marriage and family life and what Lutherans think and do about it... Among the preliminary findings: Only 16% of young Lutheran bachelors (age 16-20) admit to sexual intercourse (whereas Kinsey found that, among non-churchgoing Protestants in the same age bracket, 90% of grade-school-level males, 80% at high-school-level and 45% at college level had premarital intercourse)... 64% of married Lutherans, but only 36% of the clergy, approve the use of contraceptive devices... There was disagreement between laymen and clergy on what causes family dissension. Said the laity: finances, in-laws and disputes over child-training. Said the clergy: drink, sex, and religion. ................................................................................ ----- Newsweek, August 24, 1953 ...Kinsey's report on men was hailed with enthusiasm by some physiologists and philosophers and attacked with equal fervor by others. Any individual's attitude depended on whether he accepted Kinsey's basic notion that man's biological behavior is dictated by biological needs and subject to the same biological rules that govern lower animals... ...[In the Female Report], in concise and easy-to-read language, Kinsey batters at some contemporary ideas about the female's slower sex responsiveness, her earlier sex development, her greater extent of erogenous (sexually sensitive) zones, and her emotional reactions in sex relations... one thing strikes Dr. Kinsey as outstanding: "... the range of variation [of sex behavior] in the female far exceeds the range of variation in the male." ...The slow destruction of the double standard of sex behavior, Kinsey reasons, has resulted from freer consideration of sex matters in our times: the "emancipation" of the female, increased knowledge of contraception, anonymity of persons living in urban areas, control of venereal infection, draft armies which allow American men and women to observe foreign cultures, and drives against organized prostitution (which have drastically reduced the frequency of male contacts with prostitutes, and increased, correspondingly, the frequency of contacts with females not for direct hire.) Controversy Coming The female volume is bound to be a controversial book. Kinsey and his associates have made a contribution to man's limited scientific knowledge of human sex behavior. By presenting an immense mass of evidence, gathered by empirical investigation, they have given their concepts a certain statistical validity, but it is subject to limitations and possibly misinterpretations imposed by a purely materialistic approach. Inevitably, the new book will bring protests from those who perceive the workings of morality as opposed to plain animal desire in sex and from scientists who may not approve of the doctor's method of collecting his case histories... ................................................................................ ----- Time, August 31, 1953 K-Day In London last week, the world's biggest daily, the tabloid Mirror (circ. 4,432,700), got out its three-inch type for a single banner headline: WOMEN... K-day -- the prearranged release date for a summary of [Dr. Alfred Kinsey's] book on Sexual Behavior in the Human Female (Time, Aug. 24) -- set off the biggest and raciest commotion the world's press had seen in years... Hearst papers generally gave the story maximum play, while simultaneously cluck-clucking on their editorial pages. Hearst's New York tabloid, the Daily Mirror, which seldom passes up any story with a sex angle, explained to its readers that it ran this "supposedly... scientific effort [because] we felt we could not become overpious and fail to publish it." Scripps-Howard editors had local option on how to handle the story, e.g., the San Francisco News ran only an explanation of why it was leaving Kinsey out ("This is adult reading"), while Denver's Rocky Mountain News cut out the data on the teenage petting. Other editors had more trouble figuring out euphemisms for Kinsey's clinical explanations... Some editors did their best to keep the story going, with follow-ups on what women thought about Kinsey. Many readers were indignant. The Great Bend, Kans. Tribune got so many protests "from religious groups and... individual readers" that it stopped a five-installment series with the first and swore off: "No more Kinsey." ............................................................................... ----- Collier's, September 18, 1953 How DR. KINSEY'S Report on Women May HELP YOUR MARRIAGE by [marriage counselor] Dr. Emily Hartshorne Mudd with Bill Davidson ...For the first time, as a result of [Kinsey's] work we have facts based on they systematic observation of large numbers of people; previous pioneers in the field -- mainly Sigmund Freud and Havelock Ellis-- had instead given detailed reports on individual cases. With the publication this month of the new Kinsey Report on the sexual behavior of 5,940 women, we professionals are buttressed by even more scientific fact, by additional statistically valid averages and patterns... Education is Urgently Needed Besides using the Kinsey Report on women as a yardstick for the average (as we did with the first report) we will also use it more broadly -- to educate people. Such education is badly needed. We have actually had hundreds of cases where neither the husband nor the wife realized that women are capable of any sexual response. There are many wives who consider their husbands unfaithful because they are aroused by outside stimulation, such as pictures of other women. Dr. Kinsey's new report will show these brooding wives that nearly all men react strongly to nudity, thoughts of other experiences and so on -- and that their mental stimulations help the man respond to his wife as his immediate love object... It's not surprising that Dr. Kinsey's Sexual Behavior in the Human Female is being described as one of the most controversial books of our age. Fundamentally, it is a magnificent piece of basic research which will be used by scholars for years to come as a jumping-off place for further studies. It and its companion volume give us the fullest set of facts we have at the moment on the subject of human sexual behavior. We still don't understand the implications of some of the facts; others may be disproved later on; and we may never find a practical application for much of the material. But the book should make us at least review some of the codes and mores that were set up before we knew the facts. Certainly the new Kinsey Report should bring happiness to far more people than it may hurt, and it could even change important aspects of our culture. Several of my colleagues have commented, "Don't be surprised if in the next few years you see a quiet revolution in America, with more and more thinking parents encouraging their children to marry very young -- to spare them the frustration of having no permissible sex outlet during the peak years of their desires." If this and other significant changes do take place in our culture, it will be difficult to believe that people once asked: "Why would an important scientist like Dr. Kinsey spend fifteen years of his life studying a distasteful subject like sex?" ................................................................................. Letters to the Editor ----- Time, September 7, 1953 Can't buy our Aug. 24 Time: our newsstands sold out. All holier-than-thous want to read your report on Kinsey's book. Be prepared for indignant letters to the editor. Captain and Mrs. C. N. Beecham Wichita, Kansas ............................................................................... ----- Time, September 14, 1953 You are to be complimented on giving such a comprehensive account... Dr. Kinsey feels that the information he has gathered will help people to plan for happier marriages. I believe he is right... Elizabeth Rosser Chicago, Illinois Any man who could get that much straight forward information from one, let alone nearly 6,000 women, should be Time's Man of the Year. R. C. Tomlinson West Orange, New Jersey ................................................................................ ----- Collier's, October 16, 1953 I want to commend you on your article... I have been married 19 years and my husband took at least half of those years to learn a few of the things that Kinsey sets down so clearly. Thank you for a fearless article and one which I am sure will help people. (Name withheld) De Kalb, Illinois I am no prude or saint, and Alfred C. Kinsey can publish his report on Sexual Behavior in the Human Female, but why your magazine should stoop to the low level of publishing a summary of this report is beyond me. Loren A. Bates Jackson, Mississippi ............................................................................... ----- Look, October 20, 1953 I read the article on Dr. Kinsey's report with disgust. He takes a so-called survey of a few American women with bad morals and sets them up as an example of typical American womanhood... Mrs. Chester Lyons Cedar Lake, Indiana Dr. Kinsey is to be congratulated for pioneering in the study of a perilous subject: woman. His work will serve as a kicking-off point for hundreds of scientific studies. Yet, I wonder if anyone will ever succeed in categorizing these unpredictable creatures. Bill Smith Chicago, Illinois ................................................................................ ----- Collier's, October 30, 1953 I think congratulations are in order to Dr. Emily Hartshorne Mudd and Bill Davidson for showing the proper relationship between the book and education. Instead of merely reviewing the findings, they have made them practical for education by showing the information workable.
